senior art thesis (re:call)
My art is a reclaiming of voice, a process of trauma negotiation and rewriting of what was taken from me. I connect with memory, the body, and the lingering presence of violence—both visible and invisible—by means of printing. Combining the physicality of the technique, the pressure of the press, the ink layering, and the ghostly residue left behind, explore the theme of depicting survival, resiliency, and the weight of experience.
I find great interest in the fragility of my picture or appropriation, and in its possible distortion, hiding, and reinterpretation. I look at how trauma imprints itself, how events come back, altered but unrelenting. My work occupies the intersection of personal history and social consciousness, as well as the dichotomy of vulnerability and conflict. Drawing inspiration from the language of the Uncanny and Art Horror, I illustrate how trauma distorts reality, therefore rendering the familiar disquieting.
The prints do not aim to replicate the suffering I have endured; instead, they aim to convey my personal experience. By presenting a predominantly subdued form and elevating the unseen, I affirm my presence. My art does not aim to offer resolution; instead, it endeavors to create room for pain, thought, and understanding.
Through my practice, I am learning to live alongside my story without letting it define me. Every piece is proof of survival, a negotiation between past and present, and a reminder that art—like healing—is a lifelong journey.
